Egyptian Obelisk (stone)

Although obelisk is a Greek word, it refers to a characteristic monument of ancient Egypt that has a tapered stone shaft with a pyramidal top made from a single stone. The lateral surfaces were covered with hieroglyphs expressing prayers and boasts of the Pharaoh. These were usually erected in pairs on the two sides of the ceremonial way approaching the entrance of a temple.
